The 48 images selected were chosen by an independent jury from 216 submissions by 83 artists. Works by two students, Meagan Freer and Hollis Kate SanCartier, were among the winning entries. Jurors included: Aly Boltman, director of the Southampton Art Gallery; Ron DeBoer, owner of Gallery DeBoer Fine Art and Jazz; Leigh Greaves, a local art patron, Rachel Monckton, collections manager for the Tom Thomson Art Gallery; and Steven White, a mixed media artist.

“We sought works that were strong enough to visually catch the eye of pedestrians and passers-by while keeping in mind that the composition needed to translate well onto a vertical space,” the jurors wrote. “In the end, we tried to craft a selection that included a range of mediums, techniques, atmosphere and subject matter that would give the viewer a moment of joy, and a chance to appreciate the value of art in our community.”

The artists’ names were withheld from the jury until after the selections were made. They were categorized so that only one piece by each artist could be chosen.

The jury selected the winning artists in late April, and the banners sold out within weeks, covering the full cost of production. The banners will be hung along 2nd Avenue East on the Victoria Day weekend and will move indoors to other public locations during the winter months. Next spring, the banners will become the property of the individual donors.

“We should all consider ourselves lucky to live in an area where arts are cultivated and embraced, and in a town that has been able to harness all of that talent into a tangible, grassroots downtown beautification project,” the jurors wrote.

The art banner project is run by a group of volunteers interested in building broad community support for local artists and a venue to display their work in the form of street banners. After a successful inaugural year on the Owen Sound harbour in 2009, City Council approved the exapnsion of the banners to mainstreet downtown for 2010.

Like many artists Yvonne finds it difficult to restrict herself to one medium of expression. She works with oils, watercolours, acrylics, her trusty camera and various drawing mediums. She uses “whatever works” to create an image that stirs the emotions and perhaps the memories of the viewer. Yvonne’s favorite subject matter is anything that contains water. She is driven to depict works of rivers, ponds, lakes,oceans and even rainfall. She is fascinated by the strength, fragility and beauty of this ever changing force of nature.

Yvonne is truly passionate about learning new techniques and skills that enable her to grow as an artist and a person. Recently, she has been experimenting with a variety of digital painting techniques and can see many possibilities for combining digital and traditional mediums to create both realistic and abstract works.

Although Yvonne is primarily self-taught in all mediums, she has taken both Photography and Interior Design courses at Sheridan College in Oakville and Brampton. Yvonne is also blessed to have a mentor who is generous with her knowledge and gentle in her guidance. Her family and friends play a large part in her creative process and she is very grateful for their continued support.

Yvonne’s work has been welcomed into homes in Alberta, Nova Scotia and Ontario and has been on display at the Walkerton Art Gallery. She has also received awards for her work at the Juried Art Show in Walkerton and in the Juried Photography Show in Collingwood. Samples of her work can be viewed at www.saugeenartists.ca.

Wendy Bachiu has always been artistic and creative–as a child at home or in school, as an art student, then as a graphic designer for many years. It wasn’t until the year 2001 that she rediscovered a love of painting after receiving a gift to attend a painting course held on Georgian Bay in scenic northern Ontario. After returning home, Wendy promptly gathered up painting supplies and started translating the visual images she saw daily on to paper and canvas. She has never stopped….

Wendy studied both Design and Creative arts and worked in graphic design and marketing. At present, she is focusing on watercolour and acrylic. As well, she teaches creative art classes and workshops and continues to freelance in the graphic design field.

Wendy’s work is in collections across Canada and in Holland and Denmark.

My paintings have brilliant, decisive colors and shapes. I paint what I see, but give the reality personal twist. I love the world and like to paint what is the most beautiful in it. People find my work joyful and energizing, and with depth.

In the seventies, I enrolled in Dundas Valley School of Art in the full-time program. I began painting independently around 1980 in my studio in Dundas, Ontario. I subsequently entered juried shows, had solo shows, became involved in the artist group, Women on the Bay, and participated in the group shows we organized. From 1985 to 1993, I received four Government Assistance Grants for Exhibiting Artists. In 1994 I moved to Houston, Texas. There, at Rice University, I worked on and received the Ph. D. degree in French Studies. In 2005, I moved to Wiarton, Ontario. I paint every day. I show my work occasionally. I am a member of Artists around the Sound and also enjoy, here and there, writing in local publications about the arts. I love romping in the fields with my three dogs and I love to swim in the Bay.
